On considère le plus souvent qu'il s'agit d'un dérivé du verbe d'ancien français gaber (= plaisanter, se moquer), et donc d'un surnom donné à un personnage moqueur ou aimant la plaisanterie. C'est en Vendée que le nom est le plus répandu. Variantes : Gaboraud, Gaboreau, Gaboreaud, Gaboriaud, toutes dans la même région. Egalement Gaboria, Gaborias (33), Gabory (49), Gaborit (85), Gaborel (22), Gaboret (18), Gaboriaux. A noter aussi la forme Gaboriault (Québec). La définition donnée par les dictionnaires me paraît douteuse, ne serait-ce que par la grande fréquence de certains de ces noms : il devrait en fait s'agir d'un nom de baptême, variante de Gabriel, mais il me reste à le prouver.
